Microsoft's New Set Top Box: Coming Soon at $99

As I was blowing leaves off my lawn on Saturday I had a chance to listen to a podcast that I haven't heard in a while, Windows Weekly.  The show centers around the world of Windows.  They will go into detail on upcoming product annoucements and discuss the tech news surround Microsoft.

In this episode from the past week, Paul Thurott mentioned in passing that Microsoft will be coming out with a new set top box to rival Apple TV and Roku.  It will use the same services as the Xbox 360 and allow for developers to create apps. At the time of this writing, there wasn't any word on if Xbox live gold is needed. But he did mention the box would cost $99.

This is pretty exciting news for me, even though I've been using the Apple TV exclusively for TV shows in the past couple of months.  I do have alot of purchases on Xbox 360 as well.

I have also heard that the new Xbox will include a HDMI pass through.  Which means you can connect your devices in daisy chain.  Pretty much meaning, that you can connect your other STB through the box and not tie up one of your HDMI ports.

Apple could also allow developing on the Apple TV soon as well.  I think if Microsoft can release this box for $99 and allow it to be another platform for apps and games, they will have a winning product.
